Why I Train in the Soft Skills Area
I am often asked if I can help people get a job and my first question is normally “What qualifications do you have?”
Invariably, the answer is a degree or tertiary qualification which in itself is impressive. However often it is the unasked question that stays with me most.
While your technical skills may get you the job initially, your people skills are what opens most of the doors in the future. Your work ethic, your attitude, your communication skills, your EQ and other personal attributes are the soft skills that are crucial for career success.
In the past, I have employed IT consultants and all of them had great technical knowledge. The ones I wanted were people I could talk to in a language I could understand and didn’t make me feel ignorant. Knowing how to get along with people – and displaying a positive attitude is crucial for success.
In this age of recorded messages, WhatsApp, internet you name it the personal skills are being overlooked. So as Director of Rapid Results I focus on the people skills.
For some reason, organisations seem to expect people to know how to behave on the job. That’s why it is so important to focus as much on soft skills training and development as you do on traditional hard skills.
