Okay – for me personally, this may be a bit of an exaggeration. But I know that for a lot of people, the fear of public speaking is completely and utterly unbearable, and they probably would rather die. There’s nothing quite like the sweaty palm, racing heart rate and sick to your stomach feeling you get for anywhere from a minute to a week before knowing you have to give a presentation.

Though perhaps death would not be a preferable option, public speaking is not something I can say that I enjoy. I remember once having to do an exercise where every person in the room had to get up and speak on a randomly assigned topic for 2 minutes. Anyone who thinks 2 minutes is a short period of time has obviously never had to participate in this exercise, because it may as well have been 2 hours.

The topic I was given? Penguins. The extent of my knowledge on penguins is that they are cute black and white birds that waddle and live in cold climates. That’s essentially it. Where does one go from there? Let’s just say, not very far.Since then, I have had to do a number of presentations and each and every time I feel the same. No matter how well I know my content, no matter the number of people in the room, whether it was a 45 minute seminar worth 50% of my final University paper grade, or an informal 2-minute talk on penguins to 4 or 5 people.. that same knot in my stomach is there. All I can do is try and appear reasonably relaxed (through shaking hands and jelly knees), and try to exude confidence.

In an ideal world, my confidence would be genuine and I would dazzle and entertain audiences with humour and useful information and everyone would be spellbound. But unfortunately, this is not the case. I have come to find though that whether we like it or not, there is a very high chance that all of us will have to do public speaking at least a few times in our lives, so why not try and get on top of it so it doesn’t have to be such a big deal? Wouldn’t it be nice to never have to feel nervous again?

If you currently feel like, or if you have ever felt like you wanted the ground to swallow you up while public speaking, if you would love to be able to deliver a presentation with less notes and preparation required, or you would simply like to have a bit more confidence – our upcoming public course is for you.

With the always entertaining and highly knowledgeable Cath Vincent facilitating (see her in action here, I learnt at least 3 new changes I can make in this video alone), you’ll learn how to have any audience in the palm of your hand in no time!

We will be running this half-day course on Thursday 15th June at a CBD Location in Auckland.
