“ Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership.”
– Colin Powell
We are all humans and as humans, we make mistakes. Leader or not, we fail.
And it doesn’t matter. It is how we deal with our failures that matters. It is learning from these experiences that makes a difference.
That said, let’s go over the common reasons why leadership fails.
- Poor Communication Skills. To be a good leader, you have to communicate well. Being able to communicate with your team members effectively allows you to make them aware of anything that concerns them and the team. If you fail to communicate important information properly, your team members won’t know what the goals are, what they need to do and why.
- Not Listening. As leaders, we need to talk less and listen more. We don’t have all the answers and acting like we do can lead to conflicts between you and the team.
- Unclear or No Vision. Your team members need to know their goals. Having unclear expectations can lead to poor results. How can they perform if they don’t know what is expected of them?
- Refusal to Learn. Growth happens when we continuously strive to be better. We need to be continually learning if we want to adapt to the changes in the economy, organisation, processes, etc…
- Personal Ego. Sometimes, leaders forget that they’re serving the team and not themselves. Their personal agenda gets in the way of managing the team and ensuring their needs are met.
Most of these situations can be prevented if a leader is fully committed to move forward and continuously striving to become a better leader. Being surrounded with honest and positive people can be extremely helpful.
